"Transition Town" Ideas Contest

Contest Winners

Preamble

This Ideas Contest is co-sponsored by The Conservers Society of Hamilton and District, The Dundas Star, and the community groups Dundas Ontario - in Transition (DO-iT) and Dundas Sustainable Lifestyles Project (DSLP).

A "transition town" is a community that works creatively to face the twin challenges of fossil fuel dependency and climate change, recognizing the need to make a transition to a future where it consumes less energy and produces a much smaller carbon footprint. The required changes will also lead to a community that is more resilient in response to economic upheaval. The emphasis is on positive change that draws on the strengths of the members of the community collectively working together as neighbours and friends.

So where do we start? That's the motivating question behind this ideas contest. We are asking the people of Dundas for their ideas on how we can and should change to make this beautiful valley community a more resilient and sustainable place to live.

The Rules

1. Contest Duration: The contest runs from its first announcement to March 2nd, 2009.

2. Format: Ideas are to be summarized on the single side of an 8-1/2" X 11" sheet of white paper, in a word processed or typed format; any accompanying graphs or figures must be a part of the single page submission. A contact name, phone number, street address, email address (if available) and age (if under 19) must be provided as part of the single page submission.

3. Delivery: All submissions must be enclosed in an envelope addressed to: Transition Town Ideas Contest, c/o Dundas Star, 47 Cootes Drive, Dundas, ON L9H 1B5, and either post-marked on or before March 2nd, 2009 or hand-delivered to the Star office by 4:30 pm, March 2nd, 2009.

4. A group or team may submit an entry, as long as a single contact person is provided for communication and prize awarding purposes.

5. An individual or a group may provide multiple submissions.

6. There are no geographical restrictions, as long as the ideas have direct applicability to Dundas.

7. The prizes are as follows: $300 for first prize, $200 for second prize, $100 for third prize. A limited number of honourable mentions may be allocated at the discretion of the judges.

8. The judging will be done by a three person panel, drawn from members of the community.

9. Prize winners will be announced at a public meeting to be held in early April, and the results will be kept under wraps until that meeting (all contest entrants are encouraged to attend this meeting, with their family, friends and neighbours).

10. All ideas generated by the contest can be disseminated by Dundas Ontario-in Transition.

11. The criteria used by the judging panel will be:

  • Relevance to the Transition Town themes
